Updated: TDSB Permit Fee Increases:
43.7% increase in 2013
The Toronto District School Board - as part of its budget balancing process - on June 13, 2012 approved and announced an across-the-board increase on permit fees of 40.7% effective January 1, 2013. A 3% cost-of-living adjustment brings this to 43.7%. This fee increase will narrow by $2.2 million the $11 million gap between the costs of keeping facilities open in non-school hours, and revenues generated from permit fees and the provincial Community Use of Schools Grants.
The permit fees for 2012 increased by 22%. The combined 2-year increase is 75%.
Proposed changes to the Permit Fee Category schedule, which were to become effective on September 1, 2012, have now been deferred to September 1, 2013.
Permit fees for many facilities have been unrealistically low. In the past 6 years, fees were cut by 50%, then by 50% again. Elementary school gyms have cost $2.14/hour on weeknights. Fields have cost $5.04/hour no matter what the size or condition of the field; those which are well-maintained are worth more. As a not-for-profit organization, NTSC has incorporated the lower facility costs into its overall program fees structure.
