The League

The Ontario Player Development League is a new standards-based league for elite youth soccer players, designed by the Ontario Soccer (OS) to be the highest level league for youth soccer in Ontario. The league commenced operations in May 2014 with one age group only: 2001 girls and 2001 boys teams playing in U13 divisions. Beginning in 2017, there are U13, U14, U15, and U16/17 divisions.

The Decision Process

The NTSC Board of Directors, following a thorough analysis and consultation with club stakeholders, voted unanimously on May 22, 2013 to apply for entry into the new Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) for the inaugural 2014 season and the 2015 season. The Board determined that:

  • NTSC already had the necessary resources in place - technical, facilities, financial and organizational - to successfully participate in the new league.
  • Having NTSC teams play in the OPDL would ensure that NTSC players would have an opportunity to participate within the club at all levels of youth competitive soccer in Ontario.
  • Other club programs - developmental, recreational and competiitve - would not be negatively impacted and would indeed be strengthened if the club participated in the new league.

The NTSC application was submitted on July 31, 2012. Members of the OPDL Assessment and Selection Committee visited NTSC in early September as part of their evaluation process. That committee determined which organizations' applications were recommended to the Ontario Soccer Association Board of Directors for their consideration at their Board Meeting on September 20th. The names of successful applicants were announced on September 25th. NTSC is one of the successful applicants.
