The NT Nitros U-14 girls competed in the Thornhill Challenge Cup August 19th and 20th.
In their first game of the day against Ajax, the Nitros set the tone for the day by playing with great determination and heart. With great goaltending, solid defence, elegant plays by the midfield, and quick, hard shots from the strikers, the girls easily won the game.
The second game of the day, the Nitros were up against Whitby, a tough and skilled opponent. The Nitros played hard and solid but Whitby, with some great strikes, took the lead which they maintained in an unfortunate loss for the Nitros.
In the last game of the day, the Nitros faced off against North Mississauga. The girls played a fantastic game, defeating North Mississauga thanks to great midfield action which set up the opportunities for goals from Sydney, Hayley, and Julia. In addition, Stephanie did a fantastic job in net earning the team a shut-out.
Advancing through to the finals on Sunday where they once again met Whitby, the girls knew they were in for a battle. Playing in the cold, rain and wind the girls played with everything they had. The Nitros defence was on fire all game holding the Whitby offence at bay and consistently distributing the ball well. In addition to their great defending, Nitros sweepers, Danielle and Sydney, got an assist and goal respectively. The Player of the Game, Hayley, was a force to be reckoned with as she continually dribbled through the entire Whitby defence setting up many great plays while never running out of steam. The team as a whole played a magnificent final game and were narrowly beat 2-1 to finish second overall at the tournament.
A special thanks to the U-13 call-ups; Mimi, Carly, and Emily for coming out, giving their all, and making a real difference on the pitch. Coach Richard & Jen

NT Nitros Green U9 Boys decided to enter the Georgetown Soccer Tournament, a large annual soccer event because it offered our boys the opportunity to play within the strong GOLD division and compete against 16 other elite U9 boys teams from across Southern Ontario.
It was hot! 34C both days but that did not cool our boys’ play.
On Saturday, needing to win our division to advance to the playoffs, the team’s final game of the first day was dramatic. Not only did NT Green need to win its final round robin game, but the win needed to be with a clean sheet (by shut-out) to advance to Sunday. The coaches set the game plan with new formations and the players executed brilliantly, not allowing a goal and scoring many.
On Sunday, NT Green boys needed to compete even harder. Compete they did. The semi-final game was very physical, 3 yellow cards, a player ejection for the opponent and penalty shots for each team. With all the distractions our boys never lost focus, never fell behind, and they won the game with their skill, heart and determination.
The finals saw NT Green match up against a very strong soccer squad, Hamilton Sparta, a club which dominated the teams they played all weekend. But that domination was about to end. Scoring first NT Green boys executed with the pure fundamentals of soccer, keeping ball possession, creating scoring opportunities and solid goalkeeping.
Winning the final 4-2, NT Green is the Boys U9 2011 GOLD Champions at the annual Georgetown Soccer Club Tournament.
Coaches Gerry and Jason are so proud of our U9 boys’ team accomplishment. A big thank you to our team manager Clive and player families for once again your great support.
U16 Girls - Finalists - Frank Sobil Tournament
The North Toronto Nitros GU16 team got off to a flying start to their season. Aftrer a couple of early season exhibition wins over some decent quality opposition they entered the Frank Sobil tournament in Oshawa.
In the first game, they played the host Oshawa Kicks. Early in the game , our keeper Vesna went down with a sore back. Already missing their other keeper, they played the rest of the game and the tournament with “goalie by committee”. A late come from behind charge started by a goal from Kerry and highlighted by a brilliant “Messi-esque” goal by Nicole (winning “player of the game”), got the team off to the start they needed. Special thanks to Vanessa and Rachel in net.
In the second game, the Nitros started strong and imposed their possession style game on a good London Oakridge squad. Quick goals by a callup Ella and by Kate allowed the Nitros to practice more of their possession game. A 2nd half goal by another callup, Claire from the GU14 team put the game out of reach. Player of the game was given to Claire. Rachel got the shutout!
Heading into the 3rd game on Sunday morning, the Nitros had already qualified for the Semi finals. It took them a while to get untracked against an "almost home" team of Whitby who in many cases only lived 10 minutes from the field. Whitby desperately needed a win to advance and played like it. However as the game wore on, the Nitros began to assert themselves and a wonderful goal from Vanessa who was sprung free on a sublime through pass by Ellen snatched a late tie and a first place finish for the Nitros. Special thanks to Gillian and Jaimie on the tandem effort in net. Player of the game was Ella.
In the semi final, the Nitros came up against a very strong Brams United team. The Nitros decided to put on a soccer clinic. 15 minutes into the game and they were up 4-0! Three of the goals were beautifully linked team plays with the 3rd goal having started in their own end and after 10 passes up field, a sublime finish by Kate. The other 2 team goals by Jenn and Chloe were of the same caliber but got the job done with fewer passes. A poachers goal by Vanessa finished off the job and allowed the Nitros to rest some weary bodies. The shutout went to Jaimie and Chloe.
That put the Nitros in the final with the London Oakridge team who were now looking for revenge. The result? As much possession for the Nitros as in any other game! A 6’2” London goalie playing at an unbelievable level! A 0-0 tie after regulation! A 0-0 tie after the first half of overtime!
And just when the prospect of the dreaded shootout was rearing its head, the Nitros scored a goal off a corner with no time left in the game to become the 2011 Frank Sobil Champs!.
Special mention should also go to Sarah H, Laura D, Laura C and Sarah P, our D who shut most opportunities down against us with our makeshift goalie situation and quickly turned the ball up field. Also to be singled out is Maddy and her tireless running in her first competitive tournament.
Highlights? Was it outscoring the opposition 12-3? The use of 6 different goalies? Going undefeated? The individual efforts?
I think it was the fact that the tournament organizers came over to us and said that they were happy that we had won because of the way that the girls had played and more importantly how they handled themselves on and off the field. Girls, you made NT proud!

The U14 Whites battled their way through some tough opposition and a ridiculous amount of injuries to get to the final of the tournament. They were ahead for much of the final game only to lose in the dying minutes to a heartbreaking volley into the top corner. Congratulations boys and thanks to our hard-working coaches!
U10 Girls Green - Finalists - Peterborough
The U10 Green girls team headed to Peterborough June 4-5th for their first tournament.
They had a 1-1 record Saturday, playing in pouring rain and cool temperatures. Sunday brought sunny skies and a 1-0 thrilling win in the semi finals against one of the host teams: Peteroborough City Maroon.
The final was a tough match against Whitby Iroquois A. The girls never gave up and came very close to scoring on several occasions.
Congratulations to the team and their coaches. All of their hard work in practice, and their determination in the games paid off in a very fun, exciting tournament.
U9 Boys White - Finalists - Barrie Spiritfest Tournament
After waiting out the rain in Barrie on Saturday June 4, the boys started the 12 team tournament with 2 wins over Innisfil and Barrie. On Sunday the boys played a tough game losing 3-0 to Aurora and ended up as the wild card team in the semi finals. Having to play Aurora again, the boys found a new gear and defeated a surprised Aurora team 2-0 to move on the finals against the Woodbridge Strikers. Playing in the hot sun on a Sunday afternoon, the boys outplayed Woodbridge for a good portion of the match but came out with 1-0 loss in the final. A great success and well played tournament!
